Mass-balance buoy

Autonomous measuring system that uses acoustic methods to determine sea-ice and snow thickness.

Classic mass-balance buoys use acoustic methods to measure the distance between their sensors and the ice’s surface and underside. Changes in distance indicate changes in thickness. Read more about these buoys here.
