Thermistor chain buoy

A buoy equipped with a thermistor chain that measures temperature distribution from the atmosphere, through the snow and sea ice, to the ocean.

A buoy equipped with a thermistor chain that measures temperature distribution from the atmosphere, through the snow and sea ice, to the ocean. After taking a reading, the chain is warmed, and a new temperature reading is taken to gauge the thermal conductivity of the material in its immediate surroundings. When combined, the two readings can be used to derive the mass balance and the temperature distribution from the atmosphere, through the snow and sea ice, to the ocean. You can find out more about thermistor buoys here.
