Positioning buoys

First and foremost, these buoys transmit their own position.

Known by various product names, these buoys primarily transmit (only) their own position. This data is used for scientific and logistical applications alike. Positional data from buoys can be used to derive sea-ice drift; positional data from a network of buoys can be used to analyse the motion and deformation of an entire ice field.
