Sediment core
A sample that is collected by vertical drilling into sea sediment or sediment from inland water bodies.
A sample that is collected by vertical drilling into sea sediment or sediment from inland water bodies. Assuming a homogenous horizontal sedimentation rate, they can serve as archives of paleo-geophysical information, especially as climate archives. Information can be gleaned e.g. from embedded radionuclides, stable isotopes like O18 and deuterium, or other substances which, depending on the climatic conditions, are transported into the sediment to a varying extent.
