Multiyear ice

Old ice that is at least two metres thick and has survived at least two summers.

Old ice that is at least two metres thick and has survived at least two summers. Where there is no snow cover, the ice is normally blue. During melting, large and interconnected ponds (melt ponds) form on the ice’s surface, the drainage system is well established.
