Montreal Protocol

Regulates the consumption and production of chemicals containing chlorine or bromine, which can destroy stratospheric ozone.

The Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances was ratified in Montreal in 1987 and amended and expanded in London (1990), Copenhagen (1992), Vienna (1995), Montreal (1997) and Beijing (1999). Regulates the consumption and production of chemicals containing chlorine or bromine, which can destroy stratospheric ozone. These include CFCs, methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and many others.
