Ozone layer

A layer spanning from ca. 12 to 40 km above the Earth’s surface.

The stratosphere includes a layer in which the ozone concentration is the highest: the ozone layer, which spans from ca. 12 to 40 km above the Earth’s surface. The ozone concentration is highest at ca. 20 to 25 km. The layer is depleted by anthropogenic emissions of compounds containing chloride and bromide. Every spring, there is a highly pronounced depletion of the ozone layer in the Southern Hemisphere over the Antarctic, which is due to anthropogenic emissions of chloride and bromide compounds, together with the specific meteorological conditions in the region. The phenomenon is referred to as the “ozone hole”. See also Montreal Protocol.
