Detritus

Detritus refers to particulate material produced by the decomposition of dead plants and animals. In the context of water, it also includes suspended organic sediments.

The collective term for organic or inorganic material stemming from dead organisms and their waste products. This can be the remains of plants, animals or microorganisms, like dead leaves, rotten wood, dead animals, or faeces. Detritus is produced when organic substances are broken down by bacteria, fungi and other destruents. In bodies of water, detritus can be found in the form of suspended particles or as bottom sediment. Detritus is also a food source for many organisms, like detrivores, which live off of dead organic substances.

Altogether, detritus is an important ecosystem component and plays an important part in the nutrient cycle and preservation of biodiversity.
