Antarctic Divergence

Region of divergent ocean currents that encircle Antarctica and produce upwelling.

Region of divergent ocean currents that encircle Antarctica and produce upwelling. The divergence is caused by the change in direction of the Ekman Current in the transitional zone between the belts of westerly and easterly winds. Region in the shear zone between the surface water of the West Wind Drift (deflected northward by the prevailing winds) and the East Wind Drift (which flows southward). Here, surface water is drawn from the zone between the two wind systems.
