Any non-rectilinear patch of open water in sea ice. Polynyas can contain brash ice, new ice, nilas or young ice. When bordered on one side by a coastline, referred to as coastal polynyas. When found in the same location every year, referred to as recurring polynyas. Polynyas can also form on fast ice. As a rule, they are wind-induced.
