Frazil ice
Free-floating ice needles or wafers.
Delicate needles or wafers of ice that float in the water. At times, this ice also forms in the deep – at the intersection of two bodies of water with differing physical characteristics – and is subsequently transported to the surface. It can quickly cover large expanses of water. The needles or wafers can form anywhere in the water column.
