Chloroplasts

Specialised organelles found in the cells of photosynthetically active organisms, e.g. in the cells of plants, algae and certain bacteria. They convert light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis.

Chloroplasts contain the green pigment chlorophyll and other pigments that absorb the energy from sunlight to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and NADPH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). In the Calvin cycle, this energy is used to convert carbon dioxide into energy-rich carbohydrates, which plants can use as nutrients.
