Proxy

A climate indicator or substitute for a climatic development.

A proxy climate indicator is a local dataset that is interpreted using physical and biophysical processes in order to reveal certain combinations of climate-related changes in the past (proxy data). Climate-related data derived via this method is referred to as proxy data. Examples of proxy data: pollen analyses, tree rings, properties of corals, and various types of data derived from ice cores.
